Save the Date!

This summer, from July 24-28, join SDSers from around the country for our Third National Convention! SDS has grown in numbers, in organizational capacity, and in prominence over the past year, and it’s time to celebrate those successes and decide how to move forward as an organization. We left the second convention, and the subsequent ratification process, with several excellent instruments that have served us quite well, including many of the National Working Groups, the SDS News Bulletin, and more.

We still do not have a formal national structure yet, however, and it’s time to ask, once again, how do we organize ourselves? How do we make SDS as horizontal, diverse, and accessible as possible? How do we spread out national work and empower more people to take on leadership? How can we better provide support for chapters around the country? In short, how can we become a truly effective organization that can seriously challenge the power structure of this country, and work towards building a truly democratic society?

Join us in College Park, MD to discuss these questions and more, to build skills, to network, and build our organization! We’re working on travel stipends, so don’t let a lack of funds get in the way of participating in this important event!

Folks are encouraged to arrive on Thursday, July 24th and depart Monday, July 28th. Although all decision making will start July 25th and end the evening of July 27th, there will be social events and good times July 24th and possibly an action July 28th.

The convention schedule is still open to last-minute changes, but the current draft is now public! Check it out! HERE

Both metro stations are on the Red line. Take the Red line in the direction of Glenmont. Get off at the Fort Totten station. Transfer to the Green line in the direction of Greenbelt. Get off at the College Park/University of Maryland station.

If you take a Chinatown bus, the metro station is located at the intersection of 7th Street NW and G street NW. Normally the bus stop is about two blocks away from the metro, so it is a quick walk (see google map below). Get on the Green line towards Greenbelt and get off at the College Park/University of Maryland station.

Metro:

College Park is the next to last stop on the Green line in the direction of Greenbelt. The metro runs until midnight on weekdays and 3AM on weekends. The last train from the stations at the end of the line leaves earlier, so check the metro website to see if you can get where you want to go before the metro closes. www.wmata.com Bikes are allowed on the metro, but not during rush hour which is 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.

Getting to the University of Maryland campus from the metro:

A free shuttle runs from the College Park metro station to campus, but only on weekdays. It runs from 6:30AM to 9:50PM. It makes two on campus stops. The first stop is in front of the math building and the second stop at the top of the hill is the student union. The stop for the student union is in the center of campus, so this is most likely where you should be getting off.

For the weekends, it will probably be easiest to walk to campus from the metro. You should exit out the backside of the metro station, meaning NOT the side where the busses come. Below is a link for the google map. It is about 1 mile and should take about 15 to 20 minutes. I live in this neighborhood and walk through it a lot to get to campus. I have never felt unsafe walking here, and since it is the summer there should be less noisy college students having parties in the area. You can also bike from the metro to campus in less than 10 minutes.

Housing

Housing will be at St. Stephen’s Church which is an Episcopal church in DC. You should bring a pillow and a sleeping bag with you. St. Stephen’s is located 3 ½ blocks from the Columbia Heights metro station. To get to College Park, take the green line in the direction of Greenbelt and get off at the College Park/University of Maryland station.

Walking map from Columbia Heights metro to St. Stephen’s Church: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=7769529703033914825,38.928713,-77.032451&saddr=1525+Newton+St.+NW+Washington+DC&daddr=Columbia+Heights+Station+%4038.928713,-77.032451&mra=cc&dirflg=w&sll=38.930804,-77.034009&sspn=0.005692,0.009356&ie=UTF8&ll=38.930654,-77.033097&spn=0.005692,0.009356&z=17

Food

Food costs will be included in your registration fee. Lunch and dinner will be served on Friday and Saturday, and lunch will be served on Sunday. Lunches will have vegan, vegetarian, and carnivore options, and dinner will be vegan. If you need breakfast or late night snacks, plan on bringing some food with you. CVS and 7-Eleven are both within walking distance of the campus and open 24 hours, and there are other places to eat food nearby.

What to Bring

Ride Board

YES! There IS a Rideboard! http://sdsconvention.proboards84.com/index.cgi

To operate the board, its mad simple.

  • It you want & need a ride, click the need ride thread and then click on the “Need a ride to College Park, MD / DC?” thread. This will take you to the need ride page. Here is where you’ll post a reply to let SDS know that you need a ride. You can reply by clicking on the reply icon on the top and bottom right-ish side of the post and then filling out the form.
  • If you can give a ride, first of all, THANKS! Now that your feeling good about yourself, everything for this section is the same as the “need ride” section, except that when you’ve loaded the Rideboard you’ll need to click the “offer ride” thread instead of the the “need ride”. Then you’ll click on the “Offer a ride to College Park, MD / DC?” thread. Here you’ll be able to post a reply message (the one where you tell folks that you can offer a ride) on the forum by clicking on the reply icon and filling out the form.
  • Now all you have to do is wait for a response, so keep checking!

Facilitate ‘08!

This is a message from the SDS National Convention Facilitation Working Group and we want to make sure that you all know that there will be plenty of opportunities for you to facilitate small group discussions at the National Convention this summer!

This is a great opportunity for you to practice your facilitation skills in a supportive environment. If you are interested in facilitating, but want have an experienced facilitator behind you giving you some advice when you need it, we can arrange that for you.

There are tons of roles - rockin the mic on stage, keeping everyone up to date about the agenda, facilitating large and exciting or small and intimate group discussions, and much more! There is space for folks of every experience level. We are building a team to work together and support one another through a great opportunity.

Facilitation is an empowering experience that teaches you more about the group and about yourself as well! It’s a great easy way to get more involved with National SDS. Please consider facilitating and recommending it to your friends.

You can get involved in Facilitation by either contacting the Facilitation Working Group or by signing up when you get to the convention. However, if you wish to be teamed with another Facilitator, we urge that you contact us sooner rather than later.

Decisions Made Last Year

At last year’s National Convention, SDS grew by leaps and bounds and largely reinvented itself out of nothing. We went from an amorphous internet brand-name to an actual functioning national organization completely run by students and youth, and we did it all on our own by learning how to work together and compromise to make giant collective decisions. Participatory democracy in action, what a rush! Here are some highlights from the long list of impressive things we accomplished last year:
We crafted a Vision for our organization through these documents:

Who We Are, What We Are Building

Statement on Totalist Politics

Local Organizers Come First -

Student Solidarity with Workers and Communities

Principles of Unity
We also started a working draft for our Vision for the society we wish to win:

A Vision for the Future
We agreed to take part in these Actions and Campaigns:

No War, No Warming

Iraq Moratorium

Break the Chains

Justice Will Be Served

RNC/DNC Protests
And we created these grassroots Structures:

The Member & The Chapter

SDS News Bulletin
There was also plenty of work that we didn’t complete because we ran out of time, but this year’s convention promises to be just as productive and inspiring as 2007!

Proposals to the National Convention! Read and Submit Comments!

After weeks of hard work revising and collaborating on their proposals, our authors have finalized their proposals to the convention!

The final list of proposals is listed below, with links to the full texts. But FIRST:

Participate in Pre-Convention Dialogue on the Proposals

The Outreach Working Group would like to invite you to send in your comments, (constructive) criticisms, and feedback on these proposals to sdsoutreach@gmail.com to be published in Convention Bulletin 5!!! Send in your comments by Sunday July 20th, and they will be distributed at the convention, even if you can’t go!
We are calling this a Proposals Dialogue. Our goal is to generate some thoughtful analysis and discussion on the proposals BEFORE we arrive at the convention, so that everyone in College Park has an informed and developed understanding of what we will be voting on!
To that end, we ask :

  1. That your comments on each proposal be no more than 400 words (be succinct!)
  2. That you refrain from making divisive, mean-spirited, uncomradical, etc. comments (be respectful!)
  3. That you sign your name and chapter to any comment you make (be real!)
  4. That you comment on no more than 3 proposals (be focused!)
  5. That you discuss the proposals with your chapters beforehand (be participatory!)
  6. That you consider what sds’s needs and goals are, how these proposals fit in with what we’ve already passed, how they might be implemented, and so on (be thoughtful!)

Got it? Great!
All comments will be read and evaluated for how well they spark thoughtful analysis, respectful critique, and interesting dialogue on the proposals. They will be compiled into a Proposals Dialogue Packet, to be distributed before and during the convention. So send your comments ASAP to sdsoutreach@gmail.com!
Making it reaaal explicit, here are the guidelines for the editing process:
1. Overly long comments will be cut at the paragraph completed before the 400 word limit.

2. Divisive or mean-spirited comments, personal attacks, off-topic rants, etc., will not be included.

3. Unsigned comments won’t be included; priority will be given to those members/chapters that won’t be able to make it to the convention (don’t forget to let us know!)

4. No more than 3 comments per member will be accepted; no more than 3 comments signed collectively by a chapter will be accepted; and priority will be given to comments on proposals that don’t have many comments already.

5. Dialogues, Pro’s vs. Con’s, and other forms of carefully considering the proposals in their diversity and full effects are welcome and will have priority - get creative! Multiple comments from the same chapters that make the same points about the same proposals will not have priority.

6. Concrete examples, relating how chapters are affected locally by certain decisions, benefits or costs of certain proposals, and all those other ways we all know how to do careful, thoughtful analysis have priority.

7. Authors will have their chance to argue for their proposals - we’re prioritizing comments from non-authors!
If you have an opinion about one of the proposals listed below, and would like to engage in this constructive dialogue, please send your comments to sdsoutreach@gmail.com. These will be published in Convention Bulletin 5 before the convention, and they will be available as a Proposals Dialogue Packet at the convention.
THE DEADLINE FOR ALL COMMENTS ON PROPOSALS IS SUNDAY, JULY 20th, SO PLEASE SEND IN YOUR THOUGHTS ASAP!

Proposals Passed in the Planning Process

The following proposals have been passed on the national convention planning conference calls since the last Convention Bulletin.

Fourteenth Conference Call (7/7/08)

We made two decisions:

Facilitation Decision #3: Proposal to Invite SDSers to Fill Facilitation Roles

We passed a proposal from the Facilitation Working Group, that we will invite SDSers to fill various facilitation-related roles during the convention. This includes emcees, “go-betweens” who work with the facilitators to meet their needs, and facilitators of breakout groups and other items on the agenda which are not decision-making spaces.

Proposal for Roles to be filled during National Convention

The convention will be hectic and confusing, and inevitably problems will arise that need to get solved. In order to solve them as efficiently and transparently as possible, the convention planning group needs to fill those roles and advertise who is filling them to the larger body of convention attendees. The following roles need to get filled:

1. Welcome Table/Registration Staffers - register folks, give out name tags, proposal booklets, logistical info, answer phone calls, collect donations

DELEGATED TO LOGISTICS TO FILL.

2. Onsite Logistics Team - to deal with any issues that come up with rooms, housing, food and supplies for workshops and plenaries (should be logistics person/people familiar with the site and supplies)

DELEGATED TO LOGISTICS TO FILL.

3. Conflict Resolution team - to remove unwelcome people from the convention space, as per the spectator policy, and be available to help solve personal or political issues between SDSers. (should be 3-4 folks from different caucus/auxiliary groups with experience in conflict resolution and emotional support work)

DELEGATED TO OUTREACH TO FILL.

4. Outside Facilitators and SDS Liasons - Responsible for: -proposing schedule changes (if things are running over time, if something needs to be rearranged, etc.) -check-in with how the facilitation is going/how SDSers are feeling about it. (3-4 people from Agenda group and people in communication with the facilitators)

DELEGATED TO FACILITATION TO FILL.

5. Emotional Support/Sexual Assault Response Team - be available as a safe person for SDSers that need emotional support during the convention. should be able to respond to scenarios of sexual assault or other kinds of abuse. (3-4 people from different caucus/auxiliary groups with experience doing this kind of work, including people that are experienced doing sexual assault work with both perpetrators and survivors)

DELEGATED TO OUTREACH TO FILL.

6. Housing Liaisons - give people directions to their housing, help people get their needs met, deal with property owners for mass housing

DELEGATED TO LOGISTICS TO FILL.

7. Food prep / serving for five different meals (3 lunch, 2 dinner)

8. Note takers

9. Clean up crew

The first six roles should be filled prior to the convention. The last three will be filled as people register on Thursday the 24th.

Fifteenth Conference Call (7/14/08)

We made four decisions:

1) Proposal on Deciding Decision-Making Process

PROPOSAL: The National Convention planning group shall collectively craft & suggest a voting process (2008 Votemania) for the 2008 national sds convention. 2008 Votemania shall be endorsed by the national convention planning body, and then become the “meta-process” used to decide whether or not the convention participants accept 2008 Votemania as the voting process to be used for the duration of the 2008 National SDS Convention!

EXPLANATION: The convention planning body and its sub working groups have already crafted a lot of the political and logistical nuances of the convention. While we might take this one step further and establish the voting procedure for the convention, allowing the convention body to decide this for themselves (with the guidance of our endorsed proposal) has many benefits:

  • deciding it collectively will help the convention body to feel invested in the process and the convention itself
  • while we do have the power to set the voting process, doing so would be one more major step in the use of our power that can easily be taken care of with a 30min or 45min discussion at the convention

2) Decision-Making Process Proposal for the Convention

To familiarize yourself with “2008 Votemania“, the Decision-Making Process that the National Convention Organizing Body is recommending for the Convention, go here.
3) Proposal for Draft Convention Schedule

We approved this Draft Convention Schedule!
4) Tabling Proposal

Any SDSer should be free to promote, through tabling, leafleting, etc., whatever they want, be it another organization in which they participate, a campaign for which they organize, and so on. This may be done free of charge, and space should be made at the convention for this. Any individual who is not a member of SDS and wishes to table will be evaluated on a case by case basis and if approved may do so for a fee as determined by College Park SDS. Evaluation and acceptance of non-SDS member tables will be done by the Logistics Working Group. We are part of greater movement, and tabling at the National Convention is a good opportunity for us to connect to that greater movement, as well as to learn more about the interests and passions of our fellow SDSers. University policy prohibits cash exchange in or around academic buildings, and the Logistics Team will be enforcing this during the convention.
See the full listing of decisions made by the Convention Organizing Body.

Thanks for Reading!

That’s all for now! Be sure to forward this out to your chapter, and get involved! Get involved with a working group (cause thats where the work happens) and help build sds while you build your own organizing skills.
With love,

The Outreach Working Group sdsoutreach@gmail.com
