What is sds?
We are an organization of students who look at our world and see cause for great concern. War, dehumanization, discrimination, poverty, and environmental devastation are all too prevalent in our world today. Despite all this, we have great hope that change is attainable. We are students who wish to put the gifts that circumstance and school have given us into practice, by generating well-thought out and supported critiques of society, new solutions, and the will to put this analysis into practice.
What are we up to now?
Currently we are trying to establish a Progressive Network to facilitate discourse and collaboration among progressive student groups. Because many progressive organizations at Brown share at least some common goals, we believe that these groups should communicate and cooperate to plan events, lobby the administration for desired changes, and raise awareness and support among our fellow students and the greater community. We envision a community of progressives working together to enkindle activism at Brown, through collective communication and collective action
What are our overarching goals?
The sds, as a national entity, is attempting to change mainstream society as well as the government’s policies. We are trying to bring left-leaning people together to oppose injustice en-mass, as well as develop new, more effective ways to solve the problems that plague our planet. Other chapters of sds are currently engaged in many different movements, such as the anti-war, immigrant rights, and free speech movements. As Martin Luther King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” In that spirit, we feel that it is necessary to oppose injustice wherever we encounter it.
